Niestety człowiek okazał się najgroźniejszym dla nich drapieżnikiem. Od tysięcy lat żółwie stanowiły cenny pokarm dla ludzi. Prawdopodobnie już 11 tys. lat temu rdzenni mieszkańcy wytępili żółwie olbrzymie na Florydzie… Żółwie morskie, lądowe i błotne były też do niedawna przysmakiem w Europie. Obecnie problem dotyczy głównie Ameryki Południowej, Afryki i Azji Południowo – Wschodniej. Nie oznacza to, że na innych kontynentach żółwie są bezpieczne. Rynek nielegalnego handlu żółwiami jest tak duży, że kłusownicy polują na te zwierzęta na masową skalę.
